Marginal impact of Air India Express pilots stir in Bangalore

The agitation by a section of pilots of the national carrier Air India Express had a marginal impact in India’s tech hub on Monday, as only three out of 18 flights it operates daily were cancelled, an airline official said.

Flights to Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata were cancelled as the aircraft did not land from these cities till afternoon, Air India Express spokesperson V Chandrashekar told IANS.

Passengers of the cancelled flights were accommodated in the aircraft of private carriers like Jet Airways and Kingfisher. No inconvenience was caused to passengers who have bookings on our flights. Due to weekend and Dusshera fest, the load was also less than other working days, the official said.

Of the 18 flights Air India Express operates daily out of the Bangalore international airport at Devanahalli, about 35 km from the city, four are on international routes – Dubai, Muscat, Male and Singapore – and the remaining 14 to major cities across the country.

Not many pilots are based in Bangalore. Most of them fly in from Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai and fly back in the same aircraft. A couple of aircraft land here for night halt to depart very early the following day, Chandrashekar noted.

The state-run airline does not foresee major disruption out of Bangalore, as it has made arrangement with private and budget carriers to accommodate its passengers in the event of cancellation or delays.

Air operations at several Indian airports have once again been thrown into disarray after nearly 150 disgruntled Air India pilots went on sick leave.

The pilots, mostly in the non-unionised executive category, are unhappy over the cash-strapped Air India management’s decision to slash their productivity-linked incentives by 50 percent to 70 percent a move that will drastically reduce their take-home pay.

As of yesterday morning, at least 20 domestic and international flights had either been cancelled or delayed.

The national carrier’s flight from Chennai to Kuala Lumpur, scheduled to depart at 2am, was cancelled.

All Air India passengers were transferred to an Air India Express flight which left Kuala Lumpur at 2.30am. It is too early to say about tomorrow – today morning’s flight to Kuala Lumpur.

Some talks have been initiated and we hope it will come under control, a Chennai-based senior Air India official said yesterday.

Air India and its low-cost subsidiary Air India Express connect to 25 destinations worldwide.

The new labour agitation is taking place barely two weeks after about 400 Jet Airways pilots went on a mass sick leave for days, which almost crippled the airline’s domestic and international operations.

Air India Express operations were affected today with 15 of its flights being cancelled and some others delayed as a number of pilots did not report to work to protest cut in their productivity-linked incentives. Among the flights cancelled was a Delhi-Kabul flight apart from those going from the national capital to Mumbai, Lucknow, Aurangabad, Pune, Chennai, Srinagar and Indore-Bhopal. In Chennai, two international flights to Colombo and Sharjah and one domestic flight to Madurai were cancelled due to the agitation by Executive pilots, who intend to continue their stir in the coming days. In Kolkata, a flight to Aizwal was cancelled as the pilot reported sick as a mark of protest over slashing of PLI of executive pilots (senior pilots) by up to 50 per cent in view of bad financial condition of the carrier

Air India flight leaves 25 confirmed passengers behind

A Port Blair bound Air India flight on Saturday took off from here, leaving behind 25 passengers with confirmed tickets as the airbus did not have the capacity to provide required seats to them.

The incident took place on Saturday morning when IC 287 had to take off without 25 passengers. Originally we were supposed to operate a 320 Airbus which has the capacity of 145 passengers.

But due to some operational reasons we could not use Airbus 320. We used Airbus 319 which has the capacity of 120 passengers. Thus, 25 passengers were stranded, an Air India official told.

Among the 25 passengers stranded at Netaji Subhash Chandra International Airport, 15 passengers were later sent to Port Blair by a JetLite flight.

The remaining 10 passengers will be sent on Sunday morning by our Air India flight. Now they are staying in a city hotel completely at our cost, the official said

Air India to operate additional flights

Air India will be operating additional flights on the Kolkata-Port Blair sector and Chennai-Port Blair sector this month official sources said here on Tuesday.

Air India would operate additional flights on the Kolkata-Port Blair sector on May 8,13,18 and 22 while it would operate additional flight on the Chennai-Port Blair sector on May 11,15,21 and 25,sources said.

The Andaman and Nicobar administration had requested the Union Civil Aviationa ministry to instruct Air India to provide additional flights between Kolkata-Port Blair and Chennai-Port Bliar for a month to meet the demand of the local population to visit their native place during summer vacation.

The Union Civil Aviation secretary informed the Andaman and Nicobar administration about the additional flights that Air India would operate this month,sources added.
